On modern Android, the full device backup is managed through Google/Google One rather than saved as a normal file in a Drive folder; use Drive separately for documents you deliberately upload.
Use the Android system backup
- Open Settings.
- Open Google and find Backup or Backup and restore.
- Select the correct Google Account.
- Review included data and run Back up now if available.
- Check the last successful backup.
Use Drive for individual files
Upload documents, PDFs and other files you want to access independently. Organise them in folders and open a sample from another device. A file upload does not include app settings, SMS or the whole phone.
Photos are separate
Use Google Photos backup for photos and videos, then check backup status inside Google Photos. Do not assume that installing Google Drive automatically protects the camera library.
Restoration limits
Android restores supported data during setup or through available copy-data options. Some app data, work profiles and local folders will still require the app provider’s own process.
Separate Android system backup from ordinary Drive files
The Android system backup is managed through Google or Google One settings; it is not normally a single archive placed in your personal My Drive folder. Documents manually uploaded to Drive and photos stored in Google Photos follow separate rules.
- Check the device backup under the correct Google Account.
- Open manually uploaded documents from another browser or device.
- Verify recent photos in Google Photos if that service is part of the plan.
- Export any app data that the Android backup page does not list.
This distinction matters during recovery: finding documents in Drive does not prove that settings, messages or app data will restore, and a device backup does not prove that every local file was uploaded.
