An older phone may still browse on 4G yet fail for normal voice calls if its VoLTE implementation is unsupported by the UK network.
The common misunderstanding
Seeing 4G on the status bar proves only that the phone can use that network for at least some data. It does not prove that calls, emergency access, SMS during calls or Wi‑Fi Calling are supported.
Check before replacing it
- Record the full model number and regional variant.
- Ask the current network whether that exact model supports 4G Calling on the account.
- Update the phone and carrier settings.
- Make several ordinary calls in known coverage.
- Check whether the phone remains on 4G/5G or loses data during the call.
- Try another compatible SIM only when permitted and useful for diagnosis.
Other devices can be affected
Tablets, trackers, alarm systems, telecare units, payment terminals and vehicle systems may contain older 3G-only modules. Their replacement path should come from the service provider or equipment manufacturer, not from a generic phone guide.
When replacement is justified
- The network confirms that normal voice service is unsupported.
- Security updates have ended and sensitive apps are no longer safe.
- The device lacks required frequencies or current emergency-calling support.
- A critical connected device has no supported 4G/5G upgrade path.
Warning signs after the switch-off
Typical signs include calls failing while data still works, the phone falling to 2G during a call, no simultaneous data, or an operator message that the model is unsupported. These symptoms can also have other causes, so compare another location and confirm account provisioning.
If the phone is kept only as an emergency spare, test it periodically with an ordinary call and keep the battery charged. Do not assume an unused handset remains compatible indefinitely.
The final check that prevents the common mistake
An older phone should be assessed by capability rather than age alone. Check the exact regional model, software version, VoLTE support on the intended network and whether essential apps still receive security updates. A handset can browse on 4G yet still be unsuitable for reliable voice service after 3G closure.
- Place incoming and outgoing calls with Wi‑Fi disabled.
- Check banking, authenticator and emergency-information access.
- Plan replacement before the remaining fallback or app support is withdrawn.
