Android Dual-SIM behaviour is not identical across brands: Pixel, Galaxy and other phones use different menu names, SIM combinations and rules for calls during data use.

There is no single Android Dual-SIM design

Some Android phones use two physical SIMs, some use one physical SIM plus eSIM, and selected newer devices support two active eSIMs. A second physical SIM position may also share space with a microSD card. Check the exact UK model and regional specification before buying.

Find the SIM controls on your phone

On Pixel, the controls are normally under Settings > Network and Internet > SIMs. Samsung commonly uses Settings > Connections > SIM manager. Other manufacturers use their own wording.

The important settings are usually the same even when the labels differ:

  • turn each line on or off;
  • name the lines;
  • choose defaults for calls, texts and mobile data;
  • decide whether the phone should ask before a call;
  • control data switching or data during calls where supported.

Calls and standby behaviour

Most Dual-SIM Android phones keep both lines ready while the handset is idle. During a call, however, the other line may become unavailable and calls may go to voicemail. Google documents this limitation for Pixel and also provides a data-during-calls option on supported devices. Other brands may behave differently.

Only one line is normally the data line

Select one SIM as the default for mobile data. The other line can remain available for calls and texts. Some phones can temporarily use data from the line handling a call or switch when the preferred data line has no service, but the behaviour should be tested before travel or work use.

Safe setup checklist

  1. Install current system and carrier updates.
  2. Activate and test each line separately.
  3. Give the lines unmistakable names.
  4. Set calls to Ask every time if selecting the wrong number would cause a problem.
  5. Choose the intended data line and turn Wi-Fi off briefly to verify it.
  6. Check whether the second line remains reachable during a normal call.
  7. Review roaming for each SIM separately.
  8. Keep recovery codes available before changing the number used for authentication.

When the setup does not behave as expected

Do not immediately reset the whole phone. First check that both SIMs are enabled, aeroplane mode is off, the data default is correct and the network accounts are active. Record the exact error and contact the relevant network if the phone shows a SIM or provisioning message.

The point to verify before relying on it

Android behaviour differs by manufacturer, model and regional firmware. Record the options actually shown in the SIM manager, including preferred calls, messages, data and any automatic switching. Test one ordinary call from each line and a data task during the call before depending on the setup for work or travel.

  • Check whether the SIM slot is shared with microSD.
  • Confirm the eSIM/physical-SIM combination for the exact model.
  • Do not copy a menu path from another Android brand without verifying it.
