How to Use a Work and Personal Number on One Phone — practical UK mobile guidancePractical guidance for UK mobile users

Use two numbers on one phone without mixing calls, messages, data allowances and account recovery — while recognising that Dual-SIM does not itself separate work files or employer access.

Before adding the work line

  • Confirm that the phone supports the required physical SIM or eSIM combination.
  • Check the employer's policy. A managed work profile may still be required.
  • Decide who owns the work number and what happens to it when the role ends.
  • Record which number is used for banking, password recovery and two-factor authentication.

Set clear labels and defaults

  1. Add the second line while the personal line remains active.
  2. Label the lines Personal and Work.
  3. Choose a default line for new calls, or select Ask every time.
  4. Set the mobile-data line according to the allowances and employer policy.
  5. Review the default text-message line.
  6. Assign the preferred line to important contacts where the phone supports it.

Prevent accidental calls from the wrong number

The greatest practical risk is not technical failure but sending a call or text from the wrong identity. Check the line label before starting a new conversation. On iPhone and many Android phones, the device remembers the line last used for a contact, so review that choice when a contact moves between personal and work contexts.

Separate availability without losing critical messages

You can disable the work line outside working hours, but first understand the consequences. Calls and SMS to that number will not arrive while it is off, and this may include authentication messages. Consider voicemail, call forwarding or an agreed out-of-hours contact route.

Apps remain a separate issue

Dual-SIM gives the phone a second mobile line; it does not automatically duplicate email, contacts, WhatsApp or cloud storage. Use the phone's work-profile features, separate app accounts or the employer's approved management system where required. Never install employer controls on a personal device without understanding what administrators can see or remove.

Verify the finished setup

  1. Make a normal outgoing call from each line.
  2. Call both numbers from another phone.
  3. Send and receive an SMS on both lines.
  4. Turn off Wi-Fi and check which plan supplies data.
  5. Confirm voicemail and Wi-Fi Calling where needed.
  6. Write down how to disable or remove the work line without affecting the personal number.

How to tell whether the change actually worked

Define the boundary before setting defaults. Two numbers do not create two separate photo libraries, contact books or app spaces. Decide which line owns work calls, which number is registered with messaging apps, whether a work profile or managed device is required, and what happens when employment ends.

  • Place one outgoing call from each labelled line.
  • Start a new message conversation from each number.
  • Confirm that personal mobile data is not unintentionally paying for work use.
