Activating an eSIM means downloading and enabling a provider profile on a compatible device. The safest method is the one supplied for your exact account: QR code, provider app, manual details, direct activation or supported transfer from another phone.
Before activation
- Confirm the exact phone or tablet supports eSIM in its UK or regional variant.
- Check that the network supports the device and plan.
- Connect to reliable Wi-Fi.
- Install pending system updates if the provider requires them.
- Keep the old line working until the new line is verified.
- Have the account PIN, telephone number, IMEI and EID available.
Choose the activation method
QR code
Scan the original code using the phone's eSIM setup screen or the supported camera method. Do not upload the image to a third-party QR reader. A code may be limited to one use, so repeated scanning can make diagnosis harder.
Provider app or direct activation
Some networks attach the plan to the signed-in account and send it directly to the phone. Use the provider's official app or account page, not a link from an unsolicited message.
Manual details
If supplied, enter the SM-DP+ address and activation code exactly as shown. Do not guess missing characters or copy values from another customer's setup.
Transfer from another device
A supported transfer is not the same as creating a new profile. Keep both devices nearby and do not erase the old one until the new line works.
What successful activation should look like
The profile should appear in mobile or SIM settings with the correct provider or line label. Network registration may take a few minutes. A visible profile does not by itself prove that calls, texts and data all work.
Verify the line
- Check that the line is enabled.
- Confirm the network name or signal indicator appears.
- Make and receive an ordinary call.
- Send and receive an SMS if included.
- Turn Wi-Fi off and test mobile data.
- On Dual SIM, confirm which line is selected for data and outgoing calls.
If activation fails
Record the exact error and identify the failed stage:
- The code is rejected: check whether it has expired, was already used or belongs to another device.
- The profile downloads but shows no service: check provisioning, coverage, account status and roaming.
- Signal appears but data fails: check the selected data line, allowance, roaming and provider APN guidance.
Do not delete the old profile, repeatedly rescan the code, reset the entire phone or call emergency services as a test.
Choose the right SIM or eSIM route

When this hub has done its job
The new profile should register once, pass calls/texts/data tests and remain recoverable without deleting the previous working setup prematurely.
Choose the activation route before touching the working line
Start by identifying what the provider actually issued: a QR code, app-based installation, manual details, a device notification or direct transfer. The hub should send each reader to that route and keep deletion, network reset and factory reset out of the initial activation sequence.
- Keep reliable Wi‑Fi and the provider login available.
- Record the exact stage and error if activation fails.
- Test incoming calls, SMS and data before removing the previous line.
