An eSIM can fail at four different stages: eligibility, profile download, network activation or service configuration. Identifying the stage prevents destructive fixes such as deleting a valid profile or resetting the whole phone unnecessarily.
Use the symptom to find the failed stage
| What you see | Likely stage | First check |
|---|---|---|
| No Add eSIM option | Device or regional compatibility | Exact model, software version and regional variant |
| QR code rejected or download stops | Profile delivery | Internet connection and provider-issued activation details |
| Profile appears but shows no service | Network activation or coverage | Line enabled, account provisioned and network available |
| Calls work but data does not | Service configuration | Selected data line, mobile data, roaming and provider settings |
No option to add an eSIM
- Confirm the exact model number, not only the retail family name.
- Check whether that regional variant supports eSIM.
- Install current system updates.
- Check whether the provider supports eSIM on the specific tariff.
- For an older, used or imported phone, check its network-lock status.
A missing menu is not repaired by buying another QR code. First establish that the hardware, software and network combination is eligible.
The QR code is invalid, expired or already used
Check whether a profile has already appeared in SIM settings. If it has, stop scanning and continue with activation checks. If it has not, contact the provider and ask whether the code can be reissued or the provisioning record reset.
Do not upload the code to a public QR reader and do not edit its contents. It may contain one-time account information.
The download hangs or fails
- Use a stable internet connection.
- Complete any Wi-Fi sign-in page before retrying.
- Turn off a VPN temporarily if it is blocking the provisioning service.
- Restart the phone once.
- Check the phone's date and time are set automatically.
- Ask the provider whether the profile is still available for download.
Do not delete the old working SIM while the new profile has not arrived.
The profile appears but will not activate
- Confirm that the eSIM line is switched on.
- Restart the phone.
- Check for a system update and any provider-settings update.
- Confirm that the account is active and the correct IMEI or EID has been provisioned.
- Check for a network outage or lack of coverage.
- Contact the provider before deleting the profile.
On iPhone, Apple recommends collecting the exact error message, telephone number, account PIN, IMEI and EID before contacting the provider. Keep those identifiers private.
The line has signal but cannot use mobile data
- Turn mobile data on.
- Choose the eSIM as the data line on a Dual-SIM phone.
- If abroad, check whether data roaming is required for that line.
- Check that the plan includes data and has not reached a limit.
- Use only provider-supplied APN settings.
Calls or messages use the wrong number
Review the default voice line, messaging line and contact-specific preferences. This is usually a Dual-SIM configuration issue, not an activation failure. Do not delete either eSIM to change the default number.
A transfer leaves both phones without service
Direct transfer normally deactivates the old SIM when the new profile completes, but a failed or delayed provider update can leave a gap. Keep both devices nearby, connect them to Wi-Fi and contact the provider from another phone if neither line works. Do not factory-reset either device while the number is unresolved.
Safe order of troubleshooting
- Record the exact error message.
- Check device, network and plan eligibility.
- Check internet access and provider account status.
- Restart the phone.
- Install provider and system updates.
- Confirm line and data settings.
- Contact the provider with the IMEI and EID.
- Delete and replace the profile only when instructed.
Avoid these common mistakes
- Do not erase the old phone before the new line has been tested.
- Do not repeatedly scan a one-time QR code.
- Do not delete an eSIM as the first troubleshooting step.
- Do not factory-reset a phone for an ordinary provisioning error.
- Do not copy APN or activation details from an unrelated network.
- Do not call 999 or 112 to test service.
Use the error to identify the failed layer
Group the message by stage: offer not available, code rejected, download interrupted, profile installed but not registered, or service registered without data. Each stage has a different owner and a different safe next step.
- Copy the exact message before closing it.
- Avoid deleting a profile that has already installed.
- Give the provider the stage, time and device identifiers.
