Do not assume that a UK network’s native Wi‑Fi Calling service will work overseas; support and charging vary, and several major operators explicitly restrict it to the UK.

Why this matters
A Wi‑Fi connection abroad does not by itself prove that native Wi‑Fi Calling is permitted. The phone may show the setting but fail to register, and any call that does work can still be billed under the provider’s rules.
Prepare before leaving the UK
- Check the provider’s current roaming and Wi‑Fi Calling pages for the destination.
- Confirm whether 4G Calling abroad is supported on the exact device.
- Save provider contact details and account access.
- Arrange a travel eSIM or local SIM where necessary.
- Keep app-based calling as a data option, but do not treat it as a universal replacement for emergency calling.
Do not confuse it with hotel Wi‑Fi
Connecting the phone to hotel Wi‑Fi may allow messaging apps and browser access even when native Wi‑Fi Calling is unavailable. The normal dialler can still show no service. Check which route is actually being used before making a chargeable call, and do not assume that an app call presents your UK mobile number.
Check charging as well as availability
If a provider permits or technically allows a call, that does not make it free. The call can be rated as if made from the UK, as a roaming call or under another published rule. Check calls to UK, local and third-country numbers separately, and use the provider’s current price information rather than an old forum answer.

Do not assume an app call and native Wi‑Fi Calling have the same charging or emergency behaviour. Keep a local or travel connection for ordinary calls if the UK service is unsupported.
