Messages may belong to the mobile number, the operating-system account or an individual app. Back up and migrate each layer separately.
Know what you are moving
| Service | Where history may live |
|---|---|
| SMS/MMS/RCS | Device backup and messaging app |
| iMessage | Apple devices and Messages in iCloud settings |
| WhatsApp backup or transfer system | |
| Signal | Signal’s own supported transfer or backup route |
| Telegram | Cloud chats plus separate handling for secret chats |
Before changing phones
- Confirm the phone number and account email.
- Create current backups where supported.
- Preserve 2FA and recovery.
- Use the official transfer while both phones work.
- Do not assume a general phone backup contains every encrypted messenger.
After migration
Check old and new conversations, media, group membership, message delivery and the new backup state. Keep the old phone until important histories and verification routes are confirmed.
Create an app-by-app record
- Registered phone number.
- Account email or username.
- Backup or transfer method.
- Linked devices.
- Two-step verification and recovery.
This small record is more reliable than assuming every app follows the same migration. Store it securely outside the phone and update it after the new device is verified.
Separate privacy from recoverability
A service can offer strong encryption but limited recovery, or convenient cloud history with different privacy trade-offs. Choose deliberately and explain the consequence to users who may assume every chat can always be restored.
The evidence that matters more than the label
Use this hub to distinguish message transport from account history. SMS, iMessage, WhatsApp, Signal and Telegram have different identity, backup and migration rules. Before changing phones, document which number, account, cloud service and recovery method each app uses.
- Test future message delivery as well as old history.
- Keep both numbers available during migration.
- Avoid unofficial tools that require private databases or verification codes.

When this hub has done its job
The chosen accounts and conversations should open on the new setup, while number registration, backups and recovery are checked separately for each service.
