A UK PAYG number can be disconnected after prolonged inactivity, even when credit remains. The exact inactivity period and what counts as qualifying use depend on the provider, so check the current rule before a long trip.
Check the rule before leaving the UK
At the time of review, O2, Three and Vodafone publish six-month or 180-day activity rules for relevant PAYG services. Their definitions are not identical, and tariffs can change. EE uses a hibernation process for inactive PAYG accounts. Treat the provider's current help page and terms as the authority for your specific plan.
What may count as activity
Depending on the provider, qualifying activity may include a chargeable call, outgoing text, mobile-data use, top-up, bundle or add-on purchase. Receiving calls or texts, using Wi-Fi, opening the provider app or leaving credit untouched may not count.
Before travelling
- Check the provider's inactivity date and write down the deadline.
- Confirm that roaming is enabled for the destination.
- Check whether the SIM must first be activated or topped up in the UK.
- Make sure you can access the account without relying only on SMS to that number.
- Save provider contact details and account-security information offline.
- Set a reminder well before the inactivity deadline.
Avoid an expensive “keep-alive” action
A brief roaming data connection can trigger a daily pass or other charge. Before using the line, check whether a small top-up or outgoing text counts and what it will cost in that country. Disable automatic mobile-data switching so the UK PAYG line does not become the data line unexpectedly.
Do not leave security to one inactive number
If the PAYG number receives banking or account-recovery codes, add an authenticator, recovery email, backup codes or another approved method before travelling. A recycled number can create serious account-security problems.
If the number has entered hibernation or been disconnected
Contact the provider immediately over Wi-Fi. Some providers allow a limited reactivation period; after final disconnection and number recycling, recovery may not be possible.
How to tell whether the change actually worked
Before leaving the UK, read the exact inactivity rule for the current PAYG tariff and identify what counts as chargeable activity. A top-up alone, an incoming SMS or background data may not count. Schedule a small permitted action and retain proof before the provider's stated inactivity deadline.
- Test account login from abroad.
- Keep a supported payment method available.
- Record the last chargeable use and the next review date.
