Register at least two compatible security keys for a high-value account, test both and store the spare separately; one key carried with the phone is not a complete recovery plan.

Choose compatibility

Check the account’s supported standards and the phone’s connector or NFC support. A USB‑C, Lightning, NFC or combined key is not automatically compatible with every app and browser.

Set up

  1. Open the account’s official security settings.
  2. Choose security key as an authentication method.
  3. Register the first key and label it clearly.
  4. Register a second key.
  5. Test both from a separate browser or device.
  6. Review fallback and recovery options.

Store keys sensibly

Keep the daily key protected from loss and the spare in another secure location. Do not store both on the same keyring, phone case or travel bag.

High-security trade-off

Security keys are strongly phishing-resistant, but stricter configurations can make recovery difficult. Read the account-specific consequences before replacing code-based 2FA entirely.

Plan for compatibility and loss before registering the key

Check whether the phone and target services support the key through NFC, USB-C, Lightning or another required interface. A key that works on one device may not be usable on every recovery device.

  • Register at least two keys where the service allows it.
  • Store the spare away from the everyday key and main phone.
  • Name keys clearly in the account security page and test both.
  • Keep an approved fallback only if it does not undermine the reason for using hardware keys.

Do not buy a used key with uncertain ownership or install untrusted helper software. Use the service and key manufacturer’s official setup instructions.
