How to Set Up Personal Hotspot on Android

Check the basics

• Mobile data works on the phone.
• The plan permits tethering.
• The correct SIM is selected for data on a Dual-SIM phone.
• Battery Saver or Data Saver is not blocking the required behaviour.
• The phone is not already overheated or nearly flat.

Google Pixel

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Network & internet.
3. Tap Hotspot & tethering.
4. Open Wi‑Fi hotspot.
5. Set the hotspot name, password, security and automatic turn-off options.
6. Turn on Use Wi‑Fi hotspot.

Samsung Galaxy

1. Open Settings.
2. Tap Connections.
3. Tap Mobile Hotspot and Tethering.
4. Open Mobile Hotspot.
5. Review network name, password, band and allowed devices.
6. Turn the hotspot on.

Connect and verify

On the laptop or tablet, select the hotspot name and enter the password. Open a real service, check the phone’s connected-device list and monitor the operator account. If a device can connect but has no internet, first test data on the phone itself and confirm the selected data SIM.

Alternative methods and limitations

Most Android phones can share data over Wi‑Fi, Bluetooth or USB, but availability varies. Google notes that Mac computers cannot use Android USB tethering in the standard way. Samsung also warns that not all devices support every USB tethering combination. Do not install unknown “hotspot unlock” apps to bypass plan restrictions.

What should be recorded before the old setup is removed

Use the manufacturer-specific hotspot menu and select the intended data SIM. Connect the real client device, verify its name and test a download, upload and reconnection. Do not install a third-party tethering app merely because the provider or handset has not provisioned the standard function.

• Use WPA2 or WPA3 with a unique password.
• Check automatic turn-off and client limits.
• Test USB tethering separately if it is the planned fallback.
